Communication Mark Team
Mark Goldstein, President and CEO, has consistently served nonprofits as a staff member, board member or consultant since 1991. Mark’s primary role at Communication Mark is to formulate creative project strategies, direct project and grant research, and edit grant proposals. He has raised millions for nonprofit organizations by obtaining grants for organizations of all types, sizes and locales. As a volunteer, he recently played a key role in launching the first public access television station in western NC and is a 2007-2008 board member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Western North Carolina Chapter. Mark has published over 225 articles in community newspapers and other publications. He currently serves as a board member for the Western NC Nonprofit Professionals Association and other organizations.
Beth Carter, Senior Fundraising Consultant, has worked in fundraising and marketing for 15 years. Her experience spans the arts, medical, community development and affordable housing fields. As a writer she has interviewed a pioneer in genetic research, an international news correspondent, and many others who make a difference in their fields. Beth enjoys spending time with her two children, ages 9 and 12, and seeing life through their eyes. Her passions are the arts and education and she is always game for taking in a new cultural event, something her children have learned to both appreciate and tolerate.
Kristin Harkey, Fundraising Consultant, has ten years of experience in fundraising, program management and cultural tourism. During four years with The Humanities Council of SC, Kristin managed the grant review process for about 200 nonprofit applicants such as museums, libraries, university departments and cultural groups. Kristin hails from Columbia, SC, has a BA in English from the College of Charleston, a Certificate from the Iowa University Creative Writing Program and has completed graduate work at the University of South Carolina. Kristin is a skilled writer, researcher, facilitator and public relations professional. She enjoys gardening, volunteering in her neighborhood and reading about history. Kristin and her husband, Jeff Johansson, relocated to Asheville in the spring of 2007.
Laura Inscho, Fundraising Consultant, is originally from Colorado, where she was employed as an educator, a grants specialist and a fundraising consultant. She has worked most frequently with educational institutions ranging in size from small private schools to large urban districts, including Denver Public Schools. She has dedicated considerable time to organizations fighting the childhood obesity epidemic and taught yoga to obese adolescents. Laura has a passion for the arts and considerable experience volunteering for arts-based organizations. She is currently pursuing a Masters in the Art of Teaching at Western Carolina University.
Laura Simmelink, Fundraising Consultant, was raised in the Midwest and graduated from UNC-Asheville with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies. She has worked with nonprofits since 1999, as a staff member, board member and consultant. Laura’s career has provided her with experience in several areas, including human services, education, and arts and culture. She believes that the role of the nonprofit organization is essential to an inclusive, flourishing community. Laura currently serves on the board of the Center for Diversity Education and is Programming Chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Western North Carolina Chapter.
Alice Sabo, Administrator, grew up in suburban New Jersey, where she developed a bad case of wanderlust. After attending college in New Jersey and Massachusetts, she finished her Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico. Since that time, she has worked in a variety of jobs, from managing a quick print store to freelancing as a scenic artist. During her travels she has honed her administrative and skills, and has now alighted in Asheville. She still pursues painting and writing in her spare time.
